I have a laptop that does not have a cd-rom or floppy drive. It is able to boot from USB though.
I have a disk image (ghost) of the disk that I need to restore back onto the laptop. I can't find a way to actually run the Ghost utility from a USB key though.
I believe the ghost.exe should run from within DOS just fine but I can't seem to create a bootable USB key with DOS on it that allows me to run an EXE.
Edit: I managed to find a Ghost utility that I could load from a bootable USB drive. Unfortunately, when I plug in my NTFS external drive (USB), it is not detected.

You can use Hirens Boot CD. Newer versions have a free alternative to Norton Ghost, older versions have the real Norton Ghost (though it is shareware). Directions on their site how to make the 'boot cd' a bootable usb stick. Very simple, only takes a few clicks with the right software (all explained in the link).
Update:
Newer versions of Hirens Boot CD contain Parted Magic, which has many disk management tools, including Clonezilla, a free alternative to Ghost. All in all I think Parted Magic is the best disk management utility I have ever used. Clonezilla doesn't have a polished GUI like Ghost (maybe it will someday?), but it still gets the job done.
We use Symantec Ghost Boot Wizard here. I am unsure what Symantec program suites it is included in.

I recently bought an ASUS Eee PC 1000H. Lacking an optical drive I wanted to be able to boot my Norton Ghost 9.0 recovery environment from a USB stick. I assume the recent flood of these ultra mobile PC's will cause a renewed interest in this topic.
Here are the steps to make a bootable Ghost 9.0 Recovery USB stick or SD card (works just as well with the builtin SD card reader of the ASUS 1000H):
Format the stick using the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool (Google will easily locate this free utility for you). No need to use the 'Create a DOS startup disk' functionality in this case, the partition on the memory stick will be marked active for boot anyway.
Copy the folder I386 from the Ghost 9.0 Disk onto the memory stick and rename it to minint
Copy the file minintNTDETECT.COM to the root folder of the memory stick
Copy the file minintSETUPLDR.BIN to the root folder and rename it to NTLDR (without an extension)
If necessary install required Windows 2000 drivers. I copied the two files from the Eee support DVD, found in DriversLANAtherosWin2k into the memory stick folders minintINF and minintSYSTEM32DRIVERS and Ghost activates the builtin LAN adapter of the 1000H.
You're done! Boot from the USB stick.
As a side note, except for the formatting part, the same procedure can be used to boot Ghost9 from an external harddrive containing an NTFS partition. That allowed me to put the Ghost9 restore environment together with the actual backup itself onto a single 2.5' drive in a USB enclosure. Now that is what I call a portable backup solution! In contrast to memory sticks, the normal Windows Local storage disk management console (under Administrative Tools) allows to mark partitions on external harddisks as active. So no need for the HP format utility in this case.

↓ 01 – G4L
G4L is a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tool. The created images are optionally compressed and transferred to an FTP server or cloned locally. CIFS(Windows), SSHFS and NFS support included, and udpcast and fsarchiver options. Backing up Windows partitions requires the use of a bootable G4L CD or running g4l via grub4dos.

↓ 02 – Clonezilla
Clonezilla is a partition and disk imaging/cloning program similar to True Image® or Norton Ghost®. It helps you to do system deployment, bare metal backup and recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla live and Clonezilla SE (server edition). Clonezilla live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks in the hard disk. This increases the clone efficiency. With some high-end hardware in a 42-node cluster, a multicast restoring at rate 8 GB/min was reported.
- Many File systems are supported: (1) ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, jfs, btrfs, f2fs and nilfs2 of GNU/Linux, (2) FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS of MS Windows, (3) HFS+ of Mac OS, (4) UFS of FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD, (5) minix of Minix, and (6) VMFS3 and VMFS5 of VMWare ESX. Therefore you can clone GNU/Linux, MS windows, Intel-based Mac OS, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Minix, VMWare ESX and Chrome OS/Chromium OS, no matter it’s 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86-64) OS. For these file systems, only used blocks in partition are saved and restored by Partclone. For unsupported file system, sector-to-sector copy is done by dd in Clonezilla.
- LVM2 (LVM version 1 is not) under GNU/Linux is supported.
- Boot loader, including grub (version 1 and version 2) and syslinux, could be reinstalled.
- Both MBR and GPT partition formats of hard drive are supported. Clonezilla live also can be booted on a BIOS or uEFI machine.
- Unattended mode is supported. Almost all steps can be done via commands and options. You can also use a lot of boot parameters to customize your own imaging and cloning.
- One image restoring to multiple local devices is supported.
- Image could be encrypted. This is done with ecryptfs, a POSIX-compliant enterprise cryptographic stacked filesystem.
↓ 03 – Macrium Reflect Free
Macrium Reflect Free is a Free Disaster Recovery that works on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 (32 and native 64 Bit) and Windows 10. It is the fastest disk imaging and cloning software! What makes this different from others is the support for GUID Partition Table, also known as GPT. GPT is meant as a replacement to hard drives using a MBR partition table, which have a 2.20TB size limitation and extends upon UEFI. - Drive Cloning – Copies the source drive to a new WD drive, leaving all data on the source drive.

One of the major problems I’ve had with Norton Ghost is the fact that it only provides the ability to create a recovery CD … it doesn’t provide any ability to install the recovery software on a USB flash drive. USB flash drives are much faster that CD’s and are read/write, so they can be updated at a later date.
After a bit of digging, I’ve figured out how to create one without too much trouble.
The first thing that we need to do is create a bootable flash drive.
I found a very good, and simple, set of instructions to create a Windows Vista / 7 bootable flash drive on Kevin’s Blog. I used these instructions to transfer Windows 7 to a flash drive when I installed it on my laptop.
The following is an amalgamation of Kevin’s instructions and my adaptation to create the Norton Ghost Recovery flash drive. …
Required:
- USB Flash Drive (512mb or larger, 1gb to be on the safe side)
- Installed Norton Ghost (this has been tested with version 15, but it should work with 14 also)
- A computer running Vista or Windows 7
Step 1: Format the Drive
The steps here are to use the command line to format the disk properly using the diskpart utility. [Be warned: this will erase everything on your drive. Be careful.]
- Plug in your USB Flash Drive
- Open a command prompt as administrator (Right click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”.
- Find the drive number of your USB Drive by typing the following into the Command Prompt window:
diskpart
list disk
The number of your USB drive will listed. You’ll need this for the next step. I’ll assume that the USB flash drive is disk 1. - Format the drive by typing the next instructions into the same window. Replace the number ‘1’ with the number of your disk below.
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit
When that is done you’ll have a formatted USB flash drive ready to be made bootable.
Step 2: Make the Drive Bootable (this is where we start deviating from Kevin’s instructions)
Next we’ll use the bootsect utility that comes with Norton Ghost to make the flash drive bootable. In the same command window that you were using in Step 1:
- Change to the ‘agent’ directory in the Norton Ghost install directory (C:Program Files (x86)Norton GhostAgent by default):
cd “C:Program Files (x86)Norton GhostAgent” - Use the bootsect program to set the USB as a bootable NTFS drive prepared for a Ghost 15. I’m assuming that your USB flash drive has been labeled disk G: by the computer:
bootsect /nt60 g: - You can now close the command prompt window, we’re done here.
Step 3: Create a Norton Ghost Recovery CD
Follow the instructions included with Norton Ghost to create a recovery CD. Be sure you remove any unusable drivers from the recovery CD (this is usually only needed when you are running the 64bit version of Windows).
Alternatively, you can create an ISO image of the recovery CD (without actually burning a CD) … I’ll explain what you do in this case next.
Regardless of how you create the recovery CD, I suggest you set the serial number, timezone, and networking services appropriately (saves time when you are actually recovering a machine and, I think, it activates services that might not be available otherwise).
Step 4: Copy the Norton Ghost Recovery CD contents to the flash drive
Download Norton Ghost Boot Disk
After you’ve created the recovery CD, you’ll need to re-insert the CD and copy the contents to the flash drive.
If you created the ISO image instead of burning an actual CD, you can use a “ISO Mounter” program to mount the ISO image as a drive on your computer and copy the contents of the ISO to the flash drive. I’ve found SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive to be a very useful utility to do this. It’s free and easy to use.
Step 5: Test the Norton Ghost Recovery Flash Drive
Obviously you need to test the flash drive to ensure it works.
To do this, you’ll need to reboot your machine and hit whatever key is necessary to activate the boot drive selection option in BIOS (on Dell machine’s it’s usually F12, other machines might be ESC. Check your computer manual or simply watch the BIOS screen when the system boots up).
You should find that the flash drive boots into a special version of Windows Vista and launches into Norton Ghost’s recovery mode.
Theoretically, you should be able to add other utilities to this flash drive that can be run inside the recovery environment.

Format the USB flash drive to NTFS. In order to make a flash drive bootable, it must be properly formatted and equipped with the necessary boot files. Disk formatting can be done through the command prompt in Windows. Do not unplug the flash drive from the computer until formatting is complete.
Launch the DiskPart utility by typing 'diskpart' into the search box of the Windows start menu and
press enter. Then type the command 'listdisk' to locate the drive number of your flash drive.
Use the commands below to format the drive. Press enter after each command and wait for each step to complete before moving on to the next. Be sure you replace the example number '2' with the number that appeared next to your flash drive in the 'listdisk' command.
select disk 2
clean
create partition primary
select partition 0
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit

Use the bootsect utility in Norton Ghost to make the USB flash drive bootable. In the same command prompt that was used in Step 1, type in the following commands, replacing the drive letter 'g' with the correct letter of your flash drive.
cd 'C:Program Files (x86)Norton GhostAgent'
bootsect /nt60 g:
When finished, close the command prompt.

Copy the contents of the Norton Ghost recovery disk. If the recovery disk is on a CD, insert the CD and copy all of its files to the bootable USB flash drive that you just created. If the recovery disk is an ISO image file, mount the ISO with a virtual drive program and then copy the files from the ISO image to the flash drive.

Test the finished Norton Ghost bootable USB flash drive. Restart the computer and enter the BIOS boot options menu. Select your USB flash drive from the list and hit enter. The Norton Ghost recovery environment should now load from your bootable USB flash drive just as it would from a standard recovery CD.
